How to design scarves step-by-step

When you are getting ready to create a custom scarf design, you will want to start by considering the fabric options first. While silk is a classic material for scarves you may want to think about rayon or cotton or even polyester when you are making the decision for your scarf project.

If your scarf will be used for a uniform, for instance, you may want to think about polyester because it is an easy care material that is less delicate than silk.

Regardless of your decision on material, the next key choice to consider will be whether you want to have an oblong scarf (rectangle) or a square scarf. Since we are custom manufacturing your scarves, we can make the final size to the dimension you prefer. If you need suggestions on sizes, we can discuss your goals and make a recommendation as well.

Once you have decided on the material & shape for your scarves

The next decision will be what kind of artwork to print on your scarf. If your design consists of solid color artwork we can print your scarf traditionally.  When we print traditionally, we are talking about hand printing the silk material in a way that the ink saturates through the silk to get color penetration through and through. Traditional printing is the most classic way to print a scarf and worth considering when you are working on your scarf design.

With traditional printing, whether you hand paint your original design or create your design on a computer, your artwork will be translated into screens that will print one color in each position of your artwork. If your design has eight colors in it, we will make eight different screens to print the ink in those same positions on the fabric. The order quantities for traditional printing will be higher than DIGITAL PRINTING, so in many cases we will recommend digital printing.

If your original design has many gradations or blends of color or incorporates a photograph, we will print your scarves digitally to capture all of the details of the colors in the artwork. If you are not sure about how we will print your design, send us an email with your artwork and we will let you know what we recommend.

Remember, when you design scarves you want to consider how the final imagery will be worn to be sure any critical part of the design is not upside down or facing in the wrong direction.

So, it is always a good idea to look at your scarf design from all angles to be sure it will be attractive from all perspectives.

Lastly, the size of your scarf is important to the final costing.  So, before spending lots of time creating the perfect design, it is a good idea to discuss the size with us, so that you can design your scarf (including any bleed areas of the design) to have the most economical and attractive solution.
